Melasma Treatment

WHAT is Melasma?

Melasma is a common skin condition characterized by dark, discolored patches on the skin, primarily affecting the face. It most frequently appears on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and upper lip, but can also develop on other sun-exposed areas of the body. The patches are typically symmetrical and can range in color from light brown to dark brown or gray. Melasma is more prevalent in women, particularly during pregnancy, hence it is often referred to as "the mask of pregnancy." While it is not harmful, melasma can cause significant cosmetic concern and affect a person's self-esteem.

We understand the psychological impact of this condition and are committed to helping our patients achieve clearer, more even-toned skin. Through a combination of advanced treatments, preventive measures, and ongoing support, we strive to deliver lasting results and enhance our patients' confidence and well-being.

Causes of melasma

Sun Exposure

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is a major trigger for melasma. It stimulates the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color, leading to the dark patches characteristic of the condition.

Hormonal Changes

Hormonal fluctuations are a significant factor in melasma. This is why the condition is common during pregnancy, when taking oral contraceptives, or undergoing hormone replacement therapy.

Genetics

A family history of melasma can increase the likelihood of developing the condition. People with a genetic predisposition may have more melanocytes (melanin-producing cells) in their skin, making them more susceptible.

Skin Type

Melasma is more common in people with darker skin tones, as they have more active melanocytes compared to those with lighter skin.

Medications and Cosmetics

Certain medications, particularly those that increase sensitivity to sunlight, can contribute to melasma. Additionally, certain cosmetics and skincare products that irritate the skin may exacerbate the condition.

Stress

Stress can influence hormone levels and may indirectly contribute to the development or worsening of melasma.

Treatment of Melasma

We offer advanced and personalized treatments to manage and reduce the appearance of melasma. Our comprehensive approach includes:

  • Topical Treatments:  We use a variety of topical agents that inhibit melanin production and promote skin lightening. These include:
    • Hydroquinone: A skin-lightening agent that is often the first line of treatment for melasma.
    • Tretinoin and Corticosteroids: Often used in combination with hydroquinone to enhance its effectiveness and speed up the skin’s natural exfoliation process.
    • Other Agents: Such as azelaic acid, kojic acid, and tranexamic acid, which help lighten hyperpigmentation and prevent the formation of new dark spots.
  • Chemical Peels
  • Laser and Light-Based Therapies
  • Microdermabrasion and Dermabrasion
  • Sun Protection: We recommend broad-spectrum sunscreens with high SPF, as well as physical barriers such as hats and sunglasses, to prevent UV-induced exacerbation of the condition.
  • Oral Medications: In some cases, oral medications like tranexamic acid may be prescribed to help reduce melasma by inhibiting melanin production.
  • Customized Skincare Regimen: We offer advice on lifestyle and dietary changes that can support skin health and minimize the risk of melasma flare-ups.
