Vitiligo Treatment

WHAT is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo is a chronic skin condition characterized by the loss of pigment in certain areas of the skin, resulting in white patches. This occurs when the melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin (the pigment that gives skin its color), are destroyed or stop functioning. Vitiligo can affect any part of the body, including the skin, hair, and mucous membranes. It can develop at any age and in individuals of all skin tones, though it may be more noticeable in those with darker skin. The condition is generally benign but can cause psychological distress and impact self-esteem due to its visible nature.

Sheen Clinics understand that vitiligo is more than just a skin condition; it can significantly impact a person's confidence and quality of life. Our dedicated team of dermatologists and specialists is committed to providing personalized care and comprehensive support to our patients. We work closely with each individual to develop a tailored treatment plan that addresses their specific needs and goals.

Causes of Vitiligo

Autoimmune Response

Vitiligo is commonly associated with an autoimmune response in which the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys melanocytes.

Genetic Factors

A family history of vitiligo or other autoimmune diseases increases the likelihood of developing the condition, suggesting a genetic predisposition.

Neurogenic Factors

Some theories suggest that vitiligo may be linked to the release of neurochemicals that are toxic to melanocytes, contributing to their destruction.

Environmental Triggers

Exposure to certain environmental factors, such as sunburn, stress, or exposure to industrial chemicals, may trigger or exacerbate vitiligo in individuals who are genetically predisposed.

Oxidative Stress

An imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body may lead to oxidative stress, which can damage melanocytes and contribute to the onset of vitiligo.

Treatment of vitiligo

Our approach is tailored to each patient’s specific needs and the extent of their condition. Treatment options include:

  • Topical Treatments: Topical corticosteroids are commonly used to reduce inflammation and encourage repigmentation in the affected areas. Calcineurin inhibitors, such as tacrolimus and pimecrolimus, can also be effective, particularly for sensitive areas like the face.
  • Phototherapy: Narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) phototherapy is a widely used treatment that exposes the skin to specific wavelengths of ultraviolet light. This therapy helps stimulate melanocyte activity and promote repigmentation.
  • Excimer Laser Therapy: The excimer laser delivers targeted UVB light to specific areas of depigmented skin, promoting repigmentation.
  • Depigmentation Therapy: For extensive vitiligo, particularly when repigmentation is not feasible, depigmentation therapy may be used to lighten the remaining pigmented skin. This creates a more uniform skin tone.

With a combination of advanced medical therapies, compassionate care, and a focus on the latest research, we offers a pathway to improved skin health and well-being for those affected by vitiligo. Our goal is to help our patients achieve the best possible outcomes and regain confidence in their appearance.
